I've been designing complex web-based software since 2000. Here are a few examples.
TIAA
Logged in Account Area Redesign
When TIAA renamed and rebranded themselves, they needed a partner to bring their new brand to life under login. This was not an activity in applying new colors and fonts. TIAA wanted to fundamentally change they way the interacted with participants, from presenting data, to presenting useful tools and information to the user, based on their actual finances.
I co-led a design team to explore design options for friendly and useful new logged in account area.
DESIGN EXPLORATION
Once we gathered an understanding of the goals and guidelines for the new brand, we started off by exploring a huge number of interface ideas. We worked collaboratively with our client in a few all day workshop sessions.
EARLY DESIGNS
For early designs we started with sketches, then moved into wireframes, mockups and animations.
WIREFRAMES, MOCKUPS AND ANIMATION EXPLORATION
We took initial concepts and added fidelity. More detailed design documentation is available upon request.

TESTING HIGHER FIDELITY DESIGN IDEAS
We did two rounds of testing with real users. For the first round we gathered in our office and brought participants on site. As they tested in one room, we watched live video in another room, where we were capturing issues and tweaking designs.
After further refinement, we took high fidelity design ideas to a more formal set of usability testing sessions. We were gratified to learn that much of what we'd designed resonated very strongly with the intended audience.
AFTER
TIAA has been working through implementation of the design ideas we created. I can share additional details on request.
FedEx Office
I was the design lead, with Effective Inc., for multiple large projects with FedEx office over the course of five years. When Fedex Office initially engaged with us, they had a very basic offering for online printing, which fell short of actual capabilities they offered in store. I led multiple design teams through the creation of a robust, highly visual Print Online offering.
Here are a few sample documents from this work.
Introduction of Print Products
FedEx Office introduced the idea of 'products' around 2010. Products allowed customers to more easily select pre-configured packages of printing options--for example, coil binding, a clear cover and tabs for a large bound document.
This document shows initial flow ideas for how products would be incorporated into the flow, for both consumers and corporate customers, who had their own white-label version of the app.
INTRODUCTION OF TEMPLATES
FedEx Office incorporated templates, which they called "custom docs" around 2010. Custom docs allowed customers to fill in document content into pre-designed templates.
This document shows initial flow ideas for how custom docs would be incorporated into the flow, for both consumers and corporate customers.
